THANKS TO THE ROAD CREWS
The following message was sent to our Association President from the Mayor's Office.

Dear Friend,

If you're thinking that we've had a lot of snow this winter, you're right, at least by local standards. According to our meteorologists, Lexington averages just over 15 inches of snow a year. This year, we have already had 21 inches ... an increase of almost 40%.

Through it all, the city crews in our Division of Streets Roads and Forestry and in several other divisions, and their partners at the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, have pre-treated, salted and plowed; pre-treated, salted and plowed.  While state crews address needs on our major roads, like New Circle or Harrodsburg Road, city crews focus on over 1100 lane miles of local priority streets (as identified each year by the Urban County Council), typically those with comparatively higher traffic volume or specific concerns, such as a school.  We also treat hazardous slick spots throughout our community on the non-priority streets with little traffic volume.

The road crews have kept us moving and prevented many accidents. So to all of our snow plow operators, thanks for a great job!

Your ideas and input are always welcome. Write to me at mayor@lfucg.com.

Sincerely,

Jim Newberry, Mayor

LEXINGTON WOMEN'S GARDEN at WELLINGTON PARK

Wellington Park is the future site of the Lexington Women's Garden, a project of the Mayor's Task Force on Breast Cancer and several local Breast Cancer Support Groups.

It is our dream to have a beautiful, peaceful and alive place to honor the women who make Lexington, Kentucky such a wonderful place to live and work. The garden will be an ongoing place for therapeutic enjoyment of nature, rather than a specific project to be completed on a certain timeline.

We are planting native flowers and kitchen herbs and other suggested plant materials and welcome any help from the community.

Contact: Victoria Meyer 260-6413

Our goal is to provide joy to all the senses and to be handicapped accessible.

Eventually we will be able to sell pavers to be engraved in honor of specific individuals, in order to raise funds for the ongoing work here.

Thank you to Council member Jay McChord, Jerry Hancock from Lexington Parks and Recreation, and John Ellis from Amburgey Gardens

BOARD MEMBER PASSING

It is with sadness that we report the passing of longtime Stonewall resident and board member, Joanne Bell on May 16. Joanne was a very special person with a wealth of knowledge that she graciously offered to the Lexington and Stonewall communities for decades.

We plan to publish a memorial in the near future.

In the meantime, click here to view Joanne's obituary and sign her guest book.

RAIN GARDEN INFORMATION

A small section of Wellington Park will soon be planted in a rain garden, with Stonewall Association funding. Board members are currently working with LFUCG Parks planners to develop the plan and formalize this initiative.

YOU CAN HELP OUR NEIGHBORHOOD SCHOOLS BY DOING THE FOLLOWING:

Save Box Tops for Education:  Both Jessie Clark Middle School and Stonewall Elementary participate in this program.  Just clip the 10 cent Box Top coupon from hundreds of your favorite products.  They can be dropped off at either school during school hours at the front offices.  For a list of all participating products, visit www.boxtops4education.com. This is an easy way to help fund our schools, and every dime adds up quickly. If you would like a card or would like additional information, please contact Anna Wientjes at 252-0836 or e-mail awientjes@clayingels.com. Please consider joining the growing number of Stonewall families and friends who are earning money for our school by using their rechargeable Kroger gift cards to pay for their purchases. It’s very easy and pays off in a big way!

Recycle empty Ink Jet Cartridges:  Again both neighborhood public schools collect these and get paid for recycling them.

Campbell’s Labels:  Jessie Clark Middle School collects Campbell’s labels.  These can be dropped at the school office during school hours.

Purchase Kroger Cards:  Stonewall Elementary PTA receives money back from Kroger when you use a Kroger Gift Card purchased from the PTA.  You can put money on the card via a check, debit, credit, or cash when you are checking out, then use the card to actually purchase the groceries.  The cards cost $5.00 and are reusable.  For every $100, the school receives $4.00.
