Status Update - GREAT AMERICAN CLEANUP 2010

LFUCG's volunteer clean up crews did sweep through the Stonewall neighborhood on Saturday, June 12 as scheduled. They worked very hard, spending over 6 hours cleaning up our streets! Unfortunately, with the tremendous volume of debris that was placed on the curb and the sheer size of our neighborhood, the crews ran out of time and ran out of room in their trucks to pick up any further trash.

Several residents had indicated their tree limbs or furniture items were not picked up. As of Wednesday, June 16, all remaining items were removed. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you, including those that found another method of disposal prior to Wednesday's second pickup. Please realize that it has been communicated to the event coordinator and our Association President that the cleanup crews went above and beyond for Stonewall and that eight other neighborhoods that were scheduled for cleanup on June 12 were not addressed because they were in our area for so long.

Should we participate in future clean up efforts, we will need to have resident volunteers to assist the crews with cleaning up our neighborhood and will also consider alternate methods of participation in the GAC. Event coordinators will ensure that we have adequate representation and support from Stonewall before we coordinate another clean up effort of this scale and extend our full appreciation to LFUCG's clean up crews for their hard work.

LEXINGTON WOMEN'S GARDEN at WELLINGTON PARK

Wellington Park is the future site of the Lexington Women's Garden, a project of the Mayor's Task Force on Breast Cancer and several local Breast Cancer Support Groups.

It is our dream to have a beautiful, peaceful and alive place to honor the women who make Lexington, Kentucky such a wonderful place to live and work. The garden will be an ongoing place for therapeutic enjoyment of nature, rather than a specific project to be completed on a certain timeline.

We are planting native flowers and kitchen herbs and other suggested plant materials and welcome any help from the community.

Contact: Victoria Meyer 260-6413

Our goal is to provide joy to all the senses and to be handicapped accessible.

Eventually we will be able to sell pavers to be engraved in honor of specific individuals, in order to raise funds for the ongoing work here.

Thank you to Council member Jay McChord, Jerry Hancock from Lexington Parks and Recreation, and John Ellis from Amburgey Gardens

YOU CAN HELP OUR NEIGHBORHOOD SCHOOLS BY DOING THE FOLLOWING:

Save Box Tops for Education:  Both Jessie Clark Middle School and Stonewall Elementary participate in this program.  Just clip the 10 cent Box Top coupon from hundreds of your favorite products.  They can be dropped off at either school during school hours at the front offices.  For a list of all participating products, visit www.boxtops4education.com. This is an easy way to help fund our schools, and every dime adds up quickly. If you would like a card or would like additional information, please contact Anna Wientjes at 252-0836 or e-mail awientjes@clayingels.com. Please consider joining the growing number of Stonewall families and friends who are earning money for our school by using their rechargeable Kroger gift cards to pay for their purchases. It’s very easy and pays off in a big way!

Recycle empty Ink Jet Cartridges:  Again both neighborhood public schools collect these and get paid for recycling them.

Campbell’s Labels:  Jessie Clark Middle School collects Campbell’s labels.  These can be dropped at the school office during school hours.

Purchase Kroger Cards:  Stonewall Elementary PTA receives money back from Kroger when you use a Kroger Gift Card purchased from the PTA.  You can put money on the card via a check, debit, credit, or cash when you are checking out, then use the card to actually purchase the groceries.  The cards cost $5.00 and are reusable.  For every $100, the school receives $4.00.
