MORE INFORMATION ON THE EMERALD ASH BORER
As a follow up to our recent newsletter article, please note the link below to LFUCG's website that provides background information, quarantine and controls, prevention and treatment and links to additional resources.
We decided to plan a work day for Sunday, March 27 from 2 -4 pm…we need to trim things back, weed , etc.Bring work gloves, shovels, pruners and any other tools you might have..also friends. If the weather is bad, we will aim for the next Wednesday, March 30th, 5:30pm until dark.
Treasurer’s Report: (Vickie Blevins, Treasurer) balance is $434.93 held in the Stonewall Neighborhood Association account
Brochure:
new brochure is in progress. We are sending it out to several people
for proofing. We are getting printing estimates and then hoping to get
150 copies for the Ky statewide Garden Clubs meeting April 4-7. If
anyone has a color printer we could use, (2 sides of one sheet) I would
be eternally grateful and will do the folding myself.
Fundraising: continues
to be the main issue. We have asked Ball Homes, an insurance co.,
Forcht Bank, Bluegrass Community Foundation and Meijers. We have a lot
of suggestions from both the Lex. Public Library and the State Library
in Frankfort , as well as names of individuals to approach. It obviously
will take more than just sending letters, we need follow up calls, etc.
If anyone would be willing to work on a committee for this we sure
need help. We need $10,000…I thought it would be easy :o(
Sign: Will be built by Mark Eclov as soon as we know what donor to put on it.
Plant Markers: being done by Carrie Bale s, Secretary. Suggested to use plant stakes available at Lowes inexpensively.
Pavers: Still taking estimates, one business went out of business. Working with Jim Bean and Richard McAllister in Danville .
New Blue Ash : tree planted the end of Feb. and site cleaned of trash blown in over the winter.
Maintenance: As
with last year, we are looking for a group or person to take
responsibility for 1 week of every month just to come and check on the
garden, and take care of any weeding or watering that needs to be done.
Cheri Stipp is taking it to Altrusa to see if they will take a week. Do
you work with a support group or someone that would like to commit to
one week a month?…you can go any time during your designated week.
Komen Benches: will
be delivered to HealthwoRx where we can store them until we get the
pavement installed. We are thinking they will need to be bolted down.
Mowing: might
begin to be a factor this year now that we have more shrubs and trees
planted outside of the original beds. We can discuss this during the
work day Sunday, March 27th from 2 – 4 pm.
It is our dream to have a beautiful, peaceful and alive place to honor the women who make Lexington, Kentucky such a wonderful place to live and work. The garden will be an ongoing place for therapeutic enjoyment of nature, rather than a specific project to be completed on a certain timeline.
We are planting native flowers and kitchen herbs and other suggested plant materials and welcome any help from the community.
Contact: Victoria Meyer 260-6413
Our goal is to provide joy to all the senses and to be handicapped accessible.
Eventually we will be able to sell pavers to be engraved in honor of specific individuals, in order to raise funds for the ongoing work here.
Thank you to Council member Jay McChord, Jerry Hancock from Lexington Parks and Recreation, and John Ellis from Amburgey Gardens

YOU CAN HELP OUR NEIGHBORHOOD SCHOOLS BY DOING THE FOLLOWING:
Save Box Tops for Education: Both Jessie Clark Middle School and Stonewall Elementary participate in this program. Just clip the 10 cent Box Top coupon from hundreds of your favorite products. They can be dropped off at either school during school hours at the front offices. For a list of all participating products, visit www.boxtops4education.com. This is an easy way to help fund our schools, and every dime adds up quickly. If you would like a card or would like additional information, please contact Anna Wientjes at 252-0836 or e-mail awientjes@clayingels.com. Please consider joining the growing number of Stonewall families and friends who are earning money for our school by using their rechargeable Kroger gift cards to pay for their purchases. It’s very easy and pays off in a big way!
Recycle empty Ink Jet Cartridges: Again both neighborhood public schools collect these and get paid for recycling them.
Campbell’s Labels: Jessie Clark Middle School collects Campbell’s labels. These can be dropped at the school office during school hours.
Purchase Kroger Cards: Stonewall Elementary PTA receives money back from Kroger when you use a Kroger Gift Card purchased from the PTA. You can put money on the card via a check, debit, credit, or cash when you are checking out, then use the card to actually purchase the groceries. The cards cost $5.00 and are reusable. For every $100, the school receives $4.00.
